A Review on Satellite Radios

If you happen to be tired of listening to your old FM or AM radio that has more commercial airing time than programming time, then satellite radio is for you. To this day satellite radio provides good play lists and programs for every listener. Programs and talk shows, plus news and sports are also on their menu, along with regional weather reporting.

Two of the most prominent contingents, the XM satellite radio and Sirius Radio are on the forefront of the radio satellite business, each claiming millions of subscribers in America and Canada. The word “satellite” in their name isn’t just there for quirks. XM radio for instance owns three satellite, and two are above the earth orbiting, and are nicknamed “rock” and “roll”, while the other one is on the ground serving as a back-up in case anything ever happens to “rock” and “roll." If either satellite is destroyed or damaged, they have their big brother on the ground to back them up. The same goes for Sirius, who also owns three satellites hovering above the earth.

Their Features

The first thing subscribers like about satellite radio is that the music station has very little or no commercials at all. Over the years people have been listening to terrestrial radios, and they have no power over the limit of commercials being played, which sometimes gets so annoying that it tends to break the momentum of listening enjoyment.

The subscription based business of the satellite radio enables them to get revenues from the listeners instead of the advertisers. There is a wide range of musical spectrum satellite radio offers, and almost a hundred stations are in store for the listener,  and there are numerous programs to choose from. Therefore there is a great opportunity to section some middle-of-the-road musical preferences.

Satellite radios have committed themselves and their channels to rock, folk music, dance, blues, Latin, opera, classical, world beat, pop, rap, hip-hop, movie themes etc. All myriad of musical genres are offered to listeners. Programs such as talk shows and comedy are also there, along with news, weather, sports and the like, which breaks the redundancy of the traditional radio playing experience.

The reception

Satellite radio offers excellent reception, keeping it static free for the listeners. After all, they wouldn’t invest millions of dollars sending satellites into outer space just to be compared to old FM/AM terrestrial radios. Their signals in the case of XM satellite radios have back-up repeaters on the ground. It works in case the listener is passing inside a tunnel or being blocked by a skyscraper, that the satellite signals can’t immediately get through. However, once you have the signal, it always stays clear.

Uncensored

Talk shows and stand-up comedies on the satellite radios are all uncensored, at least for now. The freedom enjoyed by listeners and subscribers to this radio is relatively lenient when compared to the uptight FM/AM years. Radio personalities like Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony stir the air with their antics as FCC stands behind.

On screen Information

Receivers continuously display information about the title of the song and the artist. To some people this is relevant and convenient, especially when compared to waiting for the DJ to announce the title of the song and who and the artist who composed it.

Internet radio

Those who do not have receivers on their own can still use the internet subscription of the satellite radio. Both Sirius and XM satellite radios are offering subscriptions on the internet. And those who already have their receiver subscriptions can use the internet streaming for free.
